| Greetings from Phil |

Whenever the Open Championship comes around there is one technique/tactic that seems to come to the fore – putting from off the green. I couldn’t help but notice that whenever the more successful players at the Open seemed to be anywhere near the green – even if ‘near’ in some cases was quite far - they would choose to putt, rather than chip.
In the final round, when the heat was on, Oosthuizen took a Putter to get the ball on the green from over twenty yards on the seventh hole and again from just off the eighteenth. In fact, he was either putting or playing a ‘bump and run’ shot from anywhere near the hole the entire week. Why? Because the tight fairway grass that surrounded the greens would give a fairly ‘true’ roll and pace. This consistency and therefore trust meant that it was the only club that would insure that the worst score he would make was a bogey.
When you’re thinking of how to approach a green simply choose the path of least resistance, which in most cases means maximising ground time and minimising airtime. Results from poorer shots with the Putter will often be better than using an Iron because when you fly the ball, you need a bigger, faster swing and more precise contact.
Ask yourself, “Can I putt this?” If the answer is yes, then putt it! It takes a lot less effort and talent to putt a ball and run it to the hole. Your worst putt will always be better than your worst chip or pitch. You might not get the ball up and down every time, but you will definitely eliminate those thin or fat shots which contribute to big numbers on the scorecard! If you need a putting lesson, please do not hesitate to make contact so that we can improve your game.
Too many golfers select a golf ball because they think it offers extra distance. The problem with this approach is that the launch and flight characteristics that create extra hang time aren’t the same as those that create spin and offer control around the greens – that means you’re hurting your scorecard.
Find the best mix between distance and short game spin on my website with Titleist’s interactive ball fitting engine. Here, you can answer a few questions about your ‘scoring’ game and the engine will select for you the two most suitable balls in the Titleist range.
For these last few days, those of you who complete the fitting engine will then be able to purchase a sleeve of each of these balls to test at a once-off reduced price - PLUS you’ll be entered into a draw to win one of a dozen prizes! Just click here! |

| MISSING BEFORE YOU START |
 |
Jack Nicklaus stated that 90% of the misses his Pro-Am partners made on Putts they should sink, were made before they even read the line of the Putt. Rarely did he encounter amateurs with a Putter that had the right length and lie angle to allow their eyes to be over the ball in a comfortable putting position.
You will see lots of adverts these days talking about ‘roll’ and ‘alignment’. Aiming the putter in the correct direction and getting a great roll are both important factors BUT let’s start with a Putter that allows you to make the correct stroke.

It goes without saying that carrying extra weight – in any form – is bad for your endurance, but now some of the European Tour’s leading sports fitness experts have added fuel to the fire, suggesting that carrying a golf bag, or even pulling a trolley, is fundamentally harmful to your body.
Josh Salzmann, the fitness coach to Ernie Els and other leading sports and entertainment clients - and the resident fitness expert at Wentworth - is dismayed when he sees thousands of golfers arrive on the first tee carrying their golf bags and believes that carrying encourages poor body alignment. “Repeatedly lifting and carrying a bag full of metal over a four hour period is madness. If I asked someone to do the equivalent with dumbbells in the gym you would think I was crazy!”
The safest, and healthiest, way to get round the course is with a powered trolley; but how many of you actually do? Take just a couple of minutes to fill in my trolley survey below and let me know. |

Putter design has changed drastically over the years. It’s now got to a point where we’ve seen so many shapes, sizes and materials used that one could be forgiven for assuming that it would be near impossible to make any significant improvement upon such a simple, tried and tested design.
One thing has always stayed the same however; the joining of the shaft close to the face of the Putter. Odyssey have changed that with the Backstryke, placing the axis of the shaft as close as possible to the Putter head’s CoG. This ‘in-line axis’ should develop a more fluent and stable stroke path, promoting better distance control, consistency and accuracy on the greens. |
